Our Comprehensive Guide to Ashes Jewellery

The loss of a loved one is devastating and emotionally intense. It takes time for us to move through the grieving process, we provide a service to try to capture the close feeling of a loved one into a piece of memorial jewellery that you can keep close.

What is Memorial Ashes Jewellery

Memorial jewellery is the taking of cremational ashes and keeping them inside of a piece of jewellery, this jewellery can then be worn to allow the wearer to treasure those that they have lost. There are many forms of ashes jewellery around, ranging from wearable urns, glass, silver etc.

How we incorporate ashes into our jewellery

We take a colour glass and melt it to form a coloured core. This core can range from a huge amount of colours and can be used as symbolism for your loved ones birthstone. While the core is molten we roll a twist of ashes into it.

Some pieces of jewellery can be given a nicer aesthetic by adding in some silver/gold leaf flakes to help draw the eye to the ashes within the item. After this, we place a layer of clear glass over the top to encase it all together.

Annealing process

After our jewellery has been formed, within the glass there is alot of ‘stress’. The alteration of the glasses crystalline structure during forming makes it very brittle. To ensure that you receive a quality long lasting piece of jewellery we use a professional annealing method by holding the glass at a very high temperature and cooling it very slowly for many hours. This is a quality to look out for when buying bespoke glass jewellery.

Handling Ashes

Your funeral director will return ashes to you after the cremation process. If you choose to have some jewellery made you can place an order online and we will send an ‘ashes pack’.

This ashes pack will contain some information on how to handle the ashes and some tools to dispense a small amount into the vials provided. We only require a small amount of ashes per item of jewellery, normally around a tablespoon amount. We supply a prepaid padded envelope for you to return these vials and ashes information cards to us, these cards stay with the ashes at all times.

We only work with one amount of ashes at a time and thoroughly clean our work spaces between orders to ensure that there is no cross contamination. We typically will not use all the ashes that you have sent us, so we return any unused ashes alongside your jewellery.
