What’s Is Sterling Silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper. The fine sterling silver, for example, 99.9% pure silver, is relatively soft, so silver is usually alloyed with copper to increase its hardness and strength. Sterling silver is prone to tarnishing, however with the right care your piece will stay looking beautiful.
How to care for your piece.
Sterling silver has always been an incredibly popular precious metal, with its high quality and beautiful shine. There are a few steps to take to maintain this.
Step 1.
Avoid contact with any chemicals – yes this includes things like perfume and moisturiser as well as your household cleaning products. Unfortunately, this also includes sea water, hot tubs, and swimming pools. So always take your jewellery off while using any of these products to avoid contact until your skin is fully dry.
Step 2.
Storing your piece of jewellery – sterling silver will tarnish after time for all sorts of reasons However normally this is a reaction to sulphur compounds. (mainly hydrogen sulphide in the air) the best way to prolong the life of your jewellery is to store it away from sunlight in a soft pouch/box ideally also inside an airtight bag when your not wearing it.
Step 3.
Cleaning your piece of jewellery – If your jewellery isn’t heavily tarnished then the best way is to use a silver polishing cloth. This will remove the scratches and tarnish on the silver jewellery, make the jewellery become nice and shiny again. If this doesn’t work because your piece is too tarnished then you can use a home remedy of ½ a cup of white wine vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda to soak your jewellery in for a few hours before buffing with your fine cloth.
